"Education is ruining our common sense"
I received an sms from one of my promising trainee - An illiterate man and his highly educated son went on a trek. They put up a tent and camped by a river side in the evening. Late at night the dad wakes up his son and says "Look up son, what you see?” Son replies "Countless stars". Dad: “What does that tell you?” Son: "Astronomically it proves that there are countless number of stars and numerous planets." Dad: "Idiot, someone has stolen our tent!” MORAL: Education ruins your common sense!
It got me thinking, in a way its true – Current education is ruining our common sense. Kids are taught to learn by heart and mug up the lessons. Of course they end up getting good grade but
then do they actually benefit from such type of learning? Without understanding the concepts and logic, current youth end up becoming robots coded with certain data that they have mugged up for clearing exams.
We start believing a concept or truth without questioning it. It is the beginning of the disintegration of our intellect. The scenes from the movie “Three Idiots” comes to my mind.
The movie reveals a lot about our current education system and tries to highlight its weakness. I really would like to do what Aamir Khan’s character did in that movie- create a unique learning system and start an institution that challenges conventional learning.
I remember flaunting a Tee-shirt in my college days with the print- "I was born intelligent... but education ruined me!" ha ha ... Isn’t it an irony that creative and lateral thinking is rare to find in fact harder to accept and digest?
